Charter jet aircraft can be broken down into a few simple categories. There are numerous makes and models within each type, but understanding how these aircraft are grouped will help you discuss your needs when talking to your charter jet operator or broker.
Very Light Jet
Also commonly known as VLJ, micro light jet, and micro jet, very light jets are small, single pilot planes with seating for up to five or six passengers. These aircraft are often used as commuter jets and for air taxi services, shuttling passengers to and from larger cities or airports.
Since most flights are short, very light jets usually do not come with a lavatory. Very light jet models include A700 AdamJet, Eclipse 500, HondaJet, Phenom 100, and Cessna Citation Mustang.
Light Jet
Light jets are the perfect aircraft for small parties and short distances. These charter jet planes typically offer seating for up to eight passengers as well as a private lavatory.
They can usually fly non-stop for about 1200 to 2300 miles, depending on the model, and comfortably attain flight speeds of 500 miles an hour. Light charter jet models include Citation I and II, Citation Bravo, Learjet 31 and 55, Hawker 400XP, and BeechJet 400.
Medium Jet
Also known as a midsize jet or a mid jet, these aircraft offer a distinct upgrade over light and very light jets. They usually have stand-up room in the cabin, a small galley for food prep, and an enclosed lavatory.
With seating for up to nine passengers, most of these aircraft can typically fly non-stop for anywhere from 1800 – 3000 miles. Models include the Gulfstream 100 and 150, Citation VI and VII, and Hawker 600, 700, and 800.
Super Medium Jet
These aircraft are the better choice when traveling long distances or with a larger group. They offer comfortable seating for eight to nine passengers, private lavatories, and frequently a full service galley.
Super medium jets can typically travel 3500 miles nonstop at around 500 miles an hour. Models include Citation X, Falcon 50, Gulfstream 200, and Hawker 1000.
Heavy Jet
This is the aircraft of choice for luxury accommodations and long distance travel. Most heavy jets offer seating for 12 – 15 people, with some having space for up to 19 passengers. These charter jets typically have plenty of stand-up room, enclosed lavatories, and full service galleys.
Heavy jets typically fly non-stop for up to 7000 miles at 500 miles per hour. Models include Gulfstream II, III, IV, and IV, Challenger 600, and Falcon 50, 900, and 2000.
